Casa de Vila Verde 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Beach Party (1963)The first film in a series of beach movies from indie studio American International Pictures, Beach Party was a surprise hit at the box office and still has charm aplenty. Enjoy this light, young wine—full of sunny lime and green apple flavor, with a mineral freshness—while experiencing the nostalgia of carefree days on the coast with stars Bob Cummings, Dorothy Malone, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.
THE WINE
“Portugal is home to a dazzling number of indigenous grape varieties that create wines of supreme originality,” says Wine Spectator. The buzz about the country’s cool wines just keeps getting louder—and here’s one of its signature whites. Named for its region of origin, Vinho Verde is famed for its refreshing, youthful nature and light, uplifting sparkle. From the talented Diogo Sepúlveda (below) and historic Casa de Vila Verde, this is one of the best we’ve tasted. With its breezy-low alcohol, waves of lime and green apple flavor plus a minerally freshness, it’s made for sipping on a sunny afternoon.
THE ESTATE
Nestled in the heart of the Sousa River Valley, Casa de Vila Verde is one of the oldest houses in the region. It has a long history of creating superior Vinho Verde and records dating back to the 13th century. The region is not only rich in winemaking, it’s rich in history, too. Nearby Guimarães is considered to be the birthplace of the Portuguese nation.
THE REGION
Vinho Verde means “green wine,” a name that reflects its green-fruit-tinged whites. It’s also a nod to enjoying them while young and vibrant (best a year or two after harvest). The damp, maritime climate yields grapes with high acidity and low alcohol, for fresh, easy drinking wines. Over 25 varieties can be used to make Vinho Verde. Alvarinho, Loureiro and Trajadura are the most popular.
WITH FOOD
Like its Albariño-producing Spanish neighbor to the north, Galicia, Vinho Verde is renowned for fresh seafood—and this fine white is a perfect partner. Locally, they’d sip it with grilled lula (calamari) or sardinhas assadas, sardines with a squeeze of lemon. True to the wine’s name, crisp green salads are also great mates—try one with arugula and Parmesan.
