Celita Sangiovese 2020

Rubicone Superiore IGT, Italy

Classic Movie Pairing

King Solomon’s Mines (1950)

For this fine discovery of a wine, watch an adventure film like MGM’s Technicolor version of King Solomon’s Mines. Starring Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr as a British hunter and wife of a missing explorer, the film follows the pair as they journey in search of the legendary diamond mines of the title. Shot on location in East Africa, it’s a stunning entertainment and the perfect pair for a wine full of attractive ripeness and fruit-forward depth.

THE WINE

Tuscany may be Sangiovese’s spiritual home, but this cherry-filled variety also makes delicious wines in the Rubicone district of nearby Emilia-Romagna. And no one showcases them like the Ravaioli family, whose Poderi dal Nespoli estate has won ‘Tre Bicchieri’ (the highest honor from Italy’s celebrated Gambero Rosso). Fourth-generation Celita is the head winemaker, and this special cuvée is her pride and joy. Like Celita, it’s bursting with personality —look for vibrant red-fruit flavor and a silky, food-friendly character.

THE REGION

Rubicone lies just across the Apennines from Tuscany in the Romagna hills, with views stretching to the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing Forli, Ravenna and Rimini, it takes its name from the river Julius Caesar famously crossed in 49 BC to challenge Rome’s authority. It only became an IGT (Indicazione Geografia Tipica) in 1995, but its reputation for quality and value has grown rapidly. An increasing number of small, perfection-seeking producers like the Ravaioli family is one reason why.

THE FAMILY

If you’re ever in the Rubicone/ Emilia-Romagna area, be sure to stop by the Ravaioli’s estate. This beautiful property boasts spectacular vineyards, a modern, well-equipped cellar and delicious, homemade food (especially their salami!). Fourth-generation winemaker Celita recently collaborated with acclaimed Piedmont consultant Giuseppe Caviola, bringing quality to new heights.

WITH FOOD

Sangiovese comes into its own when served with regional specialties. And no region can claim as many gourmet delights as Emilia-Romagna, home to famous gastronomic inventions like balsamic vinegar, Parma ham and Parmesan cheese. Try Celita’s lovely Sangiovese with a tray of antipasti, a heaping bowl of spaghetti Bolognese or your favorite pizza.
