Château Le Coin 2020

Bordeaux AOC, France

Classic Movie Pairing

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

Match an award-winning wine with an award-winning film, as dark and richly crafted as the finest of Bordeaux reds. Director Elia Kazan directed three actors to Oscars in this Tennessee Williams adaptation—only the youthful Marlon Brando was passed over for his breakthrough work as the troubled and menacing Stanley Kowalski. Savor the complex flavors in your glass as the steamy streets of 1950s New Orleans come alive onscreen.

THE WINE

Red Bordeaux is prized by wine lovers and collectors the world over. Our man in Bordeaux, Jean-Marc Sauboua, has an unrivaled set of contacts here and was able to secure this exclusive, small-estate gem from Ludovic Roussillon. This is classic Bordeaux, crafted with grapes from Ludovic’s low-yielding, 45 year-old vines. It’s made for enjoying with food (see over for our top pairing suggestions) and boasts a freshness that will have you coming back for a second glass. No stranger to rave reviews, Château Le Coin has won at least one gold medal nearly every vintage since its U.S. debut—including a Grand Gold medal from Berliner Wein Trophy and a top French gold for this 2020 release.

THE WINEMAKER

Ludovic Roussillon (holding the bottle of Le Coin below, with Jean-Marc) is a name to keep on your radar. He is a real star in the Entre Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, where he also co owns property with Pomerol’s influential Thienpont family (of highly sought-after Château Le Pin).

THE REGION

Bordeaux makes around one in eight bottles of French wine, including some of the world’s most celebrated, cellar-worthy reds. The word ‘Bordeaux’ is a derivative of au bord de l’eau, meaning ‘along the waters’—so it’s no coincidence the highest quality vineyards are those nearest to either the Gironde, Dordogne or Garonne rivers, like Château Le Coin.

WITH FOOD

Château Le Coin is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Like all young reds (especially Bordeaux), it will benefit from being decanted about 30 minutes before serving. Our favorite match—right now, anyway—is braised beef short rib with mushrooms over a bed of buttered noodles. And it’s equally delicious with beef roasts or rack of lamb.
