Château Mondain 2019

Bordeaux AOC, France

Classic Movie Pairing

Mr. Hulot’s Holiday (1953)

This French favorite is often considered one of the best comedies put to screen. Director and comedian Jacques Tati stars as a vacationer at a seaside resort who leaves a wake of mishaps in his path. This was the first of four films to feature his amiable character, Monsieur Hulot, and it’s in many ways his most charming appearance. This harmonious and full-bodied French red is a joyful companion to a lighthearted classic.

The Wine

Pierre Ciroli’s family rented Château Mondain for three generations before he finally achieved his dream of purchasing the estate in 2000. Under his care, the château has thrived – and their flagship 2019 release is delicious proof. A classic marriage of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), and Malbec (5%), it brims with rich currant, blueberry, and earthy spice flavors. One sip and you’ll understand why it won gold medals at two of France’s most prestigious wine competitions.

The Vintage

Critics and wine enthusiasts worldwide are raving about Bordeaux’s 2019 vintage. The hot growing season helped the grapes ripen to perfection and develop seriously concentrated flavors. Expert Jeb Dunnuck writes, “this is a beautiful, incredibly high-quality vintage for Bordeaux that will certainly be included in the list of recent great vintages including 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2018. The wines show beautiful ripeness and relatively sunny, full-bodied characters.”

The Region

If you love Bordeaux, you’re in good company. Bordeaux.com reports that roughly 13 bottles of Bordeaux wines are purchased every second somewhere in the world (that’s over 400 million bottles a year!). Another big fan? Thomas Jefferson. After visiting this famous (and well-respected) region in 1787, he became an unofficial ambassador and helped increase exports to the United States.

With Food

Pierre suggests decanting this elegant Bordeaux an hour before serving to open up its complex aromas and flavors. At meal time, pair it with juicy steaks, lamb chops, or other red meats. Dark-meat poultry, such as duck or turkey, would also be delicious. Vegetarians can enjoy it with savory dishes, such as mushroom risotto, or firm, aged cheeses.
