The Last Emperor (1987)

Winning all nine of its Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (Bernardo Bertolucci), this larger-than-life epic was both a popular and critical success upon release. The film follows the life of the last imperial ruler of China from his gaining the throne as a three-year-old to his final days as a private citizen botanist in communist China. Featuring a sumptuous feast for the eyes, the film was shot across multiple locations in China under the watchful eye of cinematographer Vittoria Storaro. For a bold wine pairing, pair with this rich and full-bodied red with its own historic roots.

Wine Flavor Profile

Château Tour d’Ermengard is a medium- to full-bodied red with aromas of ripe blackberry and warm spice, plus hints of licorice and wild herbs. Look for the same flavors on the palate, followed by a velvety, long, complex finish.

A deliciously decadent red (like this gold-medal winner) tastes all the richer when paired up with a great backstory…

Wine’s been made at Château Tour d’Ermengard, in southern France’s Corbières region, since at least 1172(!). Since 1803, the estate’s been under the care of Guillaume Allien’s family. He’s the eighth generation to craft wine here, and his expertise is obvious the second you take a sip of this fine red, which is made exclusively for us.

Overflowing with ripe blackberry, licorice and classic garrigue (wild herb) notes, the wine is a blend of sun-worshipping Syrah, with Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan, left unoaked so all that amazing, fruit-rich flavor shines through.

Prestigious French wine guide Gilbert & Gaillard gave it gold and raved, “Shy nose marrying raspberry, morello cherry, spices, licorice and dried herbs. Full-bodied, ample, virile palate delivering a great array of southern aromatics with very engaging purity and clean characters.” It’s perfect with roasted red meats, hearty vegetarian casseroles or a hunk of your favorite firm, aged cheese.
