Cleopatra White Blend 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Cleopatra (1963)Fox’s 1917 version of Cleopatra, starring the iconic Theda Bara, has unfortunately been lost to the ages. But the eminently enjoyable 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton is a fantastic and equally lavish substitute, containing one of the best interpretations of the Egyptian ruler’s story put to screen. At over four hours in length, it gives you plenty of time to savor this luscious white blend.
The Wine
The original femme fatale, portrayed countless times on stage and in film, Cleopatra remains one of history’s most enigmatic figures. Our suitably mysterious and seductive tribute is this gorgeous white blend. Hailing from California’s premium Paso Robles and the royally good 2019 vintage, it marries Chardonnay – the illustrious Queen of Whites – with popular Moscato. You’re in for layers of lusciously ripe fruit flavor, with a kiss of sweetness that will have you reaching for another glass.
The Grapes
Wine enthusiasts and winemakers alike adore Chardonnay for its attractive, mouthfilling flavors and ability to grow well in a range of climates. It performs most majestically (and expensively) in the vineyards of Chablis and Côte d’Or in France’s storied Burgundy region, but it also thrives in California, where it produces whites with ripe, orchard- and tropical-fruit characters. The addition of Moscato gives this blend its expressive, perfumed aromas and that classic “grape” flavor
The Region
Paso Robles is California’s most exciting region for full-flavor, top-value wines (Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish calls it “one of California’s most dynamic regions”). Its grapes were once sent north to Napa to bulk up other (pricier!) wines. Today, thanks to a recent quality revolution, the fruit stays home. The region’s hot days, cool nights, and long growing season are ideal for cultivating red and white grapes.
With Food
While this gorgeous white will be a treat on its own, we think it deserves a royal food pairing. Take inspiration from Cleopatra and enjoy it with peeled grapes and soft cheeses. The wine’s sweetness will also play well with mildly spicy dishes, such as pad Thai, lemongrass pork, or cashew chicken. Roasted white meats or creamy pastas will be tasty, too.
