Collezione di Paolo 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Sabrina (1954)Fresh, bright and brimming with personality, this Tuscan blend calls for an equal charming film pairing. What better to match it with than this classic Billy Wilder romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn as a chauffeur’s daughter caught between two wealthy brothers (Humphrey Bogart and William Holden) who vie for her attention.
The Wine
Chianti, Tuscany’s best-known red, is really on a roll, thanks to winemakers who are dedicated to high quality and a string of great vintages. Helping lead the charge is our good friend, the charismatic Paolo Masi (pictured below with his lovely wife, Anna Rita). He’s the quintessential artisan winemaker—obsessed with quality and so busy in the vineyard and winery he only recently got around to starting a website. Crafted from Sangiovese and Colorino and left unoaked, Paolo’s signature collection Chianti is no stranger to big acclaim (previous vintages have snagged 92 points from Italian critic Luca Maroni plus won prestigious medals).
THE MAESTRO
Since graduating top of his class at Florence’s wine university, “Paolo Masi has made an excellent impression with the estate wines of his family property,” says The Wine Advocate. Top Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso also sings his praises, writing that his wines show “irreproachably clean, fresh fruit and abundant personality.” Enjoy those delicious qualities in his signature Chianti.
The Estate
Fattoria di Basciano is located in the heart of Chianti’s premium Rufina district. It stands on a hill overlooking the Argomenna Valley on one side and the right bank of the Siene River on the other (it’s as gorgeous as it sounds). The area’s dry, breezy climate and heat-trapping, stony soil (known locally as galestro) are ideal for growing Sangiovese, the main grape used in Chianti’s famous wines.
With Food
Known for their bright red-fruit flavors, refreshing acidity and firm tannins, Tuscany’s reds famously come into their own with food. And, like all good Chianti, this delicious Sangiovese blend makes a fine partner for meaty pastas with rich sauces—all the better if they’re made by Anna Rita. It’s also great alongside pizza or your favorite cut of steak.
