DeLoach ‘Private Collection’ Chardonnay 2020

California

Classic Movie Pairing

Easter Parade (1948)

The world’s most popular white grape, Chardonnay, begs for an equally appealing screen presence. Pair this mouthwatering wine with expressive lead performances by Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. Featuring a soundtrack full of classic Irving Berlin songs, including the iconic title tune, MGM’s festival musical is a showcase of indelible movie moments.

THE WINE

Our friends at DeLoach Vineyards know great wine— especially Chardonnay. In fact, Wine Spectator writes that they’re “one of California’s best producers of Chardonnay,” and they’ve even scooped Wine & Spirits’ Winery of the Year title an amazing 12 times. So, when they offered to make this ‘Private Collection’ release exclusively for our customers, we were thrilled. And once you taste it, we think you will be, too.

Talented winemaker Katie Carter (below) sourced the Chardonnay, grown during the exceptional 2020 vintage, from prime-sited vineyards throughout the Golden State. In the cellar, she took a cue from Burgundy’s Chablis region—famed for its steely-crisp Chardonnay—and crafted the wine without the influence of oak barrels. The result is uniquely Californian though and delivers floral and citrusy aromas with a palate of super-ripe tropical fruits, hints of white peach and honeydew melon. A mouthwatering aperitif and happy companion with citrus-grilled chicken or shellfish.

THE GRAPE

Chardonnay is the world’s most popular white grape, due to its attractive, mouthfilling flavors and ability to grow well in a range of climates. It performs most majestically (and expensively) in the vineyards of Chablis and Côte d’Or in Burgundy, but it also thrives in California. Depending on the site (and the ambitions of the winemaker), it can be rich and buttery or refreshing and citrusy.

WITH FOOD

With its ripe tropical- and orchard- fruit flavors and delicate floral characters, this ‘Private Collection’ Chardonnay will make a delicious aperitif. At meal time, pair it with citrus- grilled chicken (to bring out the wine’s citrusy notes), simple pork chops or other savory white meats. It’ll also be tasty with fresh shellfish, poached fish or soft, creamy cheeses.
