The Silent Partner (1978)This overlooked neo-noir thriller follows a bank teller (played by Elliot Gould) who outsmarts a psychotic bank robber (Christopher Plummer) by thwarting his heist and stealing the money first. Pair this Daryl Duke-directed cat-and-mouse story with this similarly rich and multi-layered Cabernet.
THE WINE
Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon is always delightful— many are enjoyed young and juicy, but some are barrel-matured Reservas. This one hails from Luis Felipe Cayetano Edwards, a three-time Chilean Producer of the Year (AWC Vienna), and boasts a long history of 90+ point scores and international acclaim. The team crafted it with grapes grown in the estate’s best high-altitude vineyards in the premium Colchagua Valley then aged the wine in French oak barriques (with additional time to mellow in bottle) to add a complex, mellow spice character.
THE REGION
Protected by the Atacama Desert to the north, the Andes to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west and Antarctica to the south, Chile’s a true paradise for making wine. Decanter writes that “conditions in Chile produce a style of wine which displays the finesse and balance typical of Bordeaux.” The Colchagua Valley is the epicenter of great Chilean Cabernet and has been hailed as “the new Napa Valley” by Wine Enthusiast.
THE DON
Luis Felipe Cayetano Edwards (left) is taking Chilean Cab to new heights. Every year, he plants on ever steeper, higher ground in the Colchagua Valley—seeking out the purest possible grapes. The estate’s head winemaker, Nicolas Bizzarri, honed his craft in Australia, then at the famed Mondavi winery in Napa before returning to Chile to work for Luis (who happens to be his father-in-law!).
WITH FOOD
The Don’s Cabernet Sauvignon is smooth enough (and then some) to enjoy on its own. Or, do as locals in Chile would, and serve this food-friendly Cab with flame-grilled filet or Cazuela de Vacuno, a rich beef soup with vegetables. Not serving a full meal? Try Chanco, a semi-hard Chilean cheese that will accentuate the wine’s full, fruit-driven palate.
