Due Nipoti 2018
Classic Movie Pairing
The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)This “super” blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the birthplace of the Renaissance. In Carol Reed’s lavish biopic, Charlton Heston stars as the Tuscan-born Michelangelo who comes into conflict with Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison) as he struggles to paint the iconic ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It’s a perfect artistic match for such a finely crafted red wine.
The Wine
The Rossetti family’s roots go deep in Tuscany – their ancestors have lived here for over 800 years, longer than even the famed Medici clan. And this rich Super Tuscan represents the dawning of a new era at their estate in the hills of Cerreto Guidi. Virginia and Niccoló Rossetti (below) recently inherited vineyards from their grandfather. They crafted Due Nipoti (meaning ‘two grandchildren’) with hand-harvested Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, then aged the wine for eight months in fine oak barrels. It brims with ripe, black-fruit flavors and toasty spice characters.
THE 'SUPER' BLEND
Back in the 1970s, a few innovativeTuscan winemakers wanted to experiment with international grapesforbidden in the production of Chianti. Strict wine laws requiredthem to label these top-quality creations vino da tavola. Todifferentiate their rich, expensive-to-make reds from cheaper tablewines, they coined the term ‘Super Tuscan.’ The Rossettis aremasters of the style – as you’ll soon taste.
The Region
Birthplace of the Renaissance, and famed for its beautiful rolling hills, Tuscany has long been home to some of the most influential figures in the history of art and science. It’s also home to many of Italy’s top wines – including Sangiovese-based reds like Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, and (more recently) ‘Super Tuscans’ that feature international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
With Food
Take a cue from the Rossetti family and enjoy this luxurious Super Tuscan with a family meal. It’ll be delicious alongside hearty red meats, such as bistecca alla fiorentina (a T-bone steak seasoned with olive oil and spices) or roasted rack of lamb. You could also serve it with hearty pasta dishes (like eggplant lasagna or spaghetti bolognese) or firm, aged cheeses.
