El Enhebro Blanco 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Jezebel (1938)Few actresses of the 1930s (or any era) can rival Bette Davis’ fiery charisma and appeal. In the first of three movies she made with director William Wyler, Davis plays the audacious Julie Marsden, a woman determined to maintain her independence and the upper hand in relationships with men, set against the backdrop of antebellum New Orleans. The film was in some ways Warner Bros.’ answer to Gone with the Wind, which was then in production. But it’s also a great pairing for this fresh, elegant Spanish white.
The Wine
Spain is a treasure trove of stylish whites, and we can’t wait for you to taste this exciting discovery. El Enhebro hails from the Valencia region and award-winning Bodega la Viña. Its name represents a play on words, based on enebro (a local juniper bush) and enhebrar (‘to thread’), symbolizing the sewing together of Valencia’s natural landscape with its native grape varieties and winemaking traditions. A rare blend of Verdil and Merseguera, it bursts with vibrant citrus, subtle herb and fresh mineral notes.
The Grapes
Verdil is a rare white grape grown exclusively in southeastern Spain, mainly in the Valencia region. Though Verdil has fresh acidity and distinctive citrus flavors, both qualities that make it a versatile variety, plantings have declined. Today, less than 124 acres remain, but a small group of dedicated producers are working to revitalize Verdil wines. Similarly, Merseguera is a little-known white grape that thrives in southeastern Spain and is used to add complexity to blends like El Enhebro.
The Region
Known as ‘Madrid-by-the-Sea,’ the coastal region of Valencia is where stylish Madrileños head to relax seaside. The region’s hot summers, wet winters and rich soils produce excellent wines, but that’s not all you’ll find here. It’s also filled with orange groves and known as the rice capital of Spain. No wonder paella (the famous saffron-infused dish of rice, seafood, meat and veggies) was invented here
With Food
With its distinctive citrus characters and fresh acidity, El Enhebro makes a delicious aperitif. It’ll also act like a squeeze of lime when paired with seafood dishes. Our favorite matches include grilled shrimp skewers, baked tilapia and simple sardines. For a Spanish or Latin flair, try it with fish tacos, spicy ceviche or even chicken or veggie enchiladas.
