Esprit de la Cité Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
On the Town (1949)Zippy, fresh and ripe, this Sauvignon Blanc celebrates the excitement of the city. The same is true for this hit MGM musical, the first of its kind to be shot on location in New York. It tells the simple story of three sailors on leave who search for love in the big city. Star Gene Kelly, who also co-directed the movie, shares billing with Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett and Ann Miller.
The Wine
Sauvignon Blanc is one of our most in-demand whites—our customers are always asking for new bottles to try. Wish granted! We’re thrilled to bring you this exhilarating Sauvignon Blanc from southern France and the great 2019 vintage. The growing season was warmer than usual, which allowed the grapes to develop seriously intense, complex flavors, but the cooling influence of the nearby Mediterranean Sea helped the fruit retain Sauvignon Blanc’s trademark zippy freshness. Look forward to waves of ripe grapefruit, gooseberry and lemon zest characters.
The Grape
Taking off in popularity in the last 30 years, Sauvignon Blanc has traveled a long way from its spiritual home in France’s Loire Valley. Most notably, it’s a big star in Marlborough, New Zealand and in California. But you’ll find delicious examples in southern France, too—as you’ll taste here. Sauvignon Blanc is often favored as a crisper, more refreshing alternative to rich, oaky Chardonnays and can offer more vibrancy than Pinot Grigio.
The Region
‘Pays d’Oc’ is a catch-all appellation for ‘country wines’ of the Languedoc-Roussillon. Here you’ll find scorching days, cold nights and rocky terrain. It’s a land of extreme winemaking and just the type of region where flavor and character trump name. It’s also a mecca for characterful, great-value wines, from estates tucked away in hills and hidden corners. Luckily, our experts know just where to look.
With Food
While you can absolutely enjoy this fine French Sauvignon Blanc on its own, it will really delight with food. Sip a glass alongside a platter of Crottin de Chavignol (the Loire Valley’s famed goat cheese), crackers and crudités. You could also pair it with summer salads, grilled chicken or seafood dishes, such as baked white fish, seared scallops or fresh oysters.
