Flavius Reserva 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Lover Come Back (1961)Fun to drink, this unique blend of four grape varieties calls for a lively movie. What better match than a classic Doris Day-Rock Hudson comedy? The second of three such pairings portrays the wacky exploits of two rival ad execs who are destined for one another. Directed by Delbert Mann, it also stars Tony Randall and Edie Adams and earned an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay.
The Wine
If you think Portugal only does Port, think again. Crafted by winemaker Miguel Ferreira, Flavius Reserva shows how impressive the country’s modern whites are. It hails from the Douro Valley, specifically the plain of Favaios. Once called ‘Flavius’ by the Romans, Favaios has a higher altitude than the rest of the valley, which helps the grapes retain freshness and produce elegant wines. (No wonder big names like Quinta do Vallado and Quinta do Crasto also source grapes here.) Boasting 90 points and a gold medal from Gilbert & Gaillard, Flavius Reserva offers creamy, orchard-fruit flavors, plus toasty spice notes from six months’ barrel aging.
The Region
Winemaking in the Douro dates back to the third century, and in 1756, it became the world’s first wine region to have a formal demarcation. Today, “the Douro Valley has so much going in its favor, it’s almost ridiculous,” says New York Times critic Eric Asimov. It’s got good looks (below), brains (talents like Miguel), history (its famous Port trade), and distinctive grapes (read on).
The Grapes
Flavius Reserva marries four exciting white grape varieties. Local star Viosinho makes up the biggest portion of the blend (40%) and imparts body and balance. Gouveio (30%) and Arinto (10%), also Portuguese natives, add vibrant acidity and fresh citrus characters. Finally, a healthy splash of Moscatel (aka Moscato, 20%) gives expressive aromas and juicy fruit flavors.
With Food
As you’ll read on the label, winemaker Miguel thinks this is the perfect white to pair with chicken. Try spatchcock chicken, marinated in Portugal’s traditional peri-peri sauce (it’s made from piri piri peppers, but you could also substitute other peppers or paprika) and served with crispy potatoes. For a great vegetarian match, try migas (breadcrumb soup) or creamy risottos.
