Fogbound 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Red River (1948)Inspired by the Pacific Ocean and nearby Salinas River, this California white offers distinct floral and yellow fruit notes. As such, it’s well suited for this iconic Western—named for an American river—that delivers its own distinctive notes. This celebrated film depicts the rivalry between a cowhand (Montgomery Clift) and his rancher stepfather (John Wayne) as they drive cattle north from Texas to Kansas. Often cited as one of the best Westerns from director Howard Hawks, Red River offers an engaging story, memorable action and a touch of humor.
THE WINE
Fogbound honors the important role the Pacific Ocean plays in making California’s wines some of the world’s finest and freshest. Its cooling influence and rolling fog washes over vineyards, balancing the Golden State’s naturally warm, sunny days and keeping grapes vibrant. This dazzling white stars Pinot Blanc grown in premium Monterey County, supported by a healthy splash of Chardonnay from Santa Margarita. It’s the perfect balance of vibrancy and lusciousness—just ask the judges who gave it a bronze medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition.
THE GRAPES
Pinot Blanc is a rare, white mutation within the Pinot family that produces wines with vibrant acidity and ripe citrus- fruit flavors. Highly prized in the Burgundy and Alsace regions, it can yield wines that sell for upwards of $100 a bottle. Outside of France, Pinot Blanc vines are scarce, but in the United States, you’ll find them in California and the North Fork of Long Island in New York. The addition of Chardonnay gives fullness and tropical flavors.
THE REGION
Monterey’s a bit different than other nearby regions. Rainfall is low, but the underground Salinas River provides water to the vines. The sunnier areas also enjoy some of California’s longest growing seasons. Grapes here have a longer ‘hang time’ on the vines, which helps develop more complex aromas and flavors. Cooling breezes from Monterey Bay seal in freshness and prevent over-ripening.
WITH FOOD
Roll into the evening with a gently chilled glass of Fogbound and a plate of appetizers. Soft, creamy cheeses or cut veggies and hummus would both be tasty. For the main course, try a hearty Cobb salad, grilled chicken or pork chops. Baked tilapia or swordfish, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon to play up the wine’s fruit flavors, is another delicious choice.
