Grande Réserve de Gassac Blanc 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Lust for Life (1956)The rugged landscape of southern France lends itself to this wine’s concentrated notes of wild herbs and citrus just as it did to painter Vincent Van Gogh’s richly concentrated colors. Watch Kirk Douglas’s layered performance as Van Gogh in Lust for Life and enjoy the shared brilliance of director Vincente Minnelli’s lush palette and this white blend’s satisfying finish.
THE WINE
Often called ‘The Lafite of the Languedoc,’ the iconic Mas de Daumas Gassac estate has been praised by top critic Hugh Johnson for setting “an example of excellence.” Their Grand Vin white sells for over $40—but because we go way back with the Guibert family, they craft a special Grande Réserve made in its image just for you. A succulent blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, it boasts a top French gold medal and layers of ripe orchard-fruit flavor.
THE STORY
Aimé Guibert planted vines in Gassac Valley in 1970 and released his Grand Vin red in 1978. Encouraged by its success, Aimé became determined to craft a white version. White wines were very rare in the Languedoc at the time, and famed enologist Emile Peynaud tried to talk him out of it. Aimé persisted, planting several white varieties in 1976 and releasing his Grand Vin white a decade later. As this Grand Vin-inspired exclusive proves, Aimé succeeded, and to this day, his family craft fabulous, top-quality whites.
THE REGION
Hérault is a département in the Languedoc Roussillon, a rugged swath of vineyards in France’s sunny south. The region’s famed, brushy landscape, known as garrigue, imparts enticing wild herb notes to the wines (which Hugh Johnson has described as having “real local character, a strong French accent and remarkably attractive prices”). This fine white from the Guiberts is a perfect example.
WITH FOOD
As this cuvée is modeled on the top wine from the Languedoc’s premier producer, it’s worth trying a few sips (or more) on its own. But this complex white also marries well with a variety of foods. The Guiberts recommend garlic-roasted Cornish game hen or vegetarian options such as a rich mushroom quiche. Soft cheeses like aged goat cheese or Brie also make a fine match.
