Harold Lloyd Petite Sirah 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Speedy (1928)Harold Lloyd was a master comedian whose films are rightly regarded as classics not just of the silent era but across all generations of cinema. Speedy is the tale of a young man trying to save his girlfriend’s family business, and it’s packed from beginning to end with raucous gags and comedic hijinks. It also takes audiences on an incredible tour of New York City in the late 1920s, including a stop at Coney Island and cameos by Yankees Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
THE WINE
Prolific and pleasing Petite Sirah never takes itself too seriously. It’s a fitting tribute, then, to silent movie star and fearless stuntman, Harold Lloyd. Hailing from California’s premium Lodi region and the fantastic 2019 vintage (read more below), this exclusive Petite Sirah positively bursts with juicy-rich blueberry, blackberry and plum, plus delicate sweet spice notes. Turn on one of Lloyd’s classic films, uncork your bottle and act silently surprised when this velvety red speedily disappears—perhaps even before the final curtain falls.
THE GRAPE
Petite Sirah is also known as Durif (named for François Durif, the French botanist who first discovered the variety) and is most likely a crossing of Syrah and Peloursin that originates in France’s Rhône Valley. It’s a “grape that takes no prisoners,” says Tim Atkin, MW. Plantings are up 13% over the last five years, and no wonder. With its inky-black color and full body, the wines are hard to resist (just ask a member of its fan club, PS I Love You).
THE VINTAGE
Thanks to a near-perfect growing season, California is in for “another classic vintage,” and “growers and wineries say the 2019 vintage is looking pretty darn good” (wine searcher.com). The vineyards received ample rain to replenish vines early in the season, followed by a warm, dry summer that extended the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine, allowing the fruit to develop ripe, concentrated flavors.
WITH FOOD
Petite Sirah makes a delicious match for pork. Saucy ribs, pulled pork, bacon- wrapped tenderloin…you really can’t go wrong. It’ll also be tasty with burgers, lamb chops or other savory meats. Vegetarians can enjoy it alongside pizza, tomato-sauced pastas or bean-based stews or chilis. Petite Sirah is equally lovely on its own, so save a glass to sip with the TCM film below.
