HJ Fabre Malbec Reserva 2018

Mendoza, Argentina

Classic Movie Pairing

Stormy Weather (1943)

Pour a glass of this classy and textured Malbec while enjoying the talents of star Lena Horne, along with Bill (Bojangles) Robinson, Fats Waller, Dooley Wilson, and the incredible Nicholas Brothers. The film isn’t strong on plot, but rather serves as a showcase for dazzling performances by a rare all-Black cast, becoming a joyous entertainment that’s also a cultural milestone. Made during WWII, it’s also a result of Hollywood’s attempts to bridge racial divides in support of the war effort.

The Wine

Malbec is a modern-day wine phenomenon – your delicious taste comes from Hervé Fabre, the International Wine Challenge’s 2018 Winemaker of the Year. For his Reserva, Hervé hand-selected the ripest fruit from his prized 40-plus-year-old vines and treated it to 12 months in fine French oak, which imparted vanilla spice notes to the rich, bramble-fruit flavors. Tim Atkin, MW, rated the previous vintage 91 points, and the 2018 release arrives with kudos from the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

AN ARGENTINE CHÂTEAU

Nearly 30 years ago, Hervé and his wife Diane (below) left their native Bordeaux for Argentina and now run one of the country’s leading estates – with the quality obsession of a top Bordeaux château. Rigorous vineyard care helps keep grape yields low and flavor concentration high. Sustainable farming practices benefit both the environment and the wine. And, true to his heritage, Hervé swears by his favorite, fine French oak barrels in which to mature his top reds, like this Malbec Reserva

The Region

Mendoza produces 70% of all Argentina’s wine. In the high-altitude, premium sub-region of Luján de Cuyo, cool nights yield Malbec with delicious aromas and fine acidity. And since land without access to the melt waters of the Andes is nothing but desert, the Fabre Montmayou winery flourishes with the help of las acequias (irrigation channels).

With Food

Argentina is world famous for its beef. The country’s grass-fed, free-roaming cattle produce some of the most flavorful, lean steaks money can buy. No wonder beef is the most popular match for the country’s star red. So fire up the grill and enjoy with your favorite cut of steak. You could also pair it with burgers, ribs, veggie kebabs, or hearty stews and chilis.
