Il Poeta 2020

Gavi DOCG, Italy

Classic Movie Pairing

Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941)

This bright and zippy white pairs perfectly with a smart and engaging comedy. We could think of none better than this classic directed by Alexander Hall and starring Robert Montgomery, Evelyn Keyes and Claude Rains. It tells the story of boxer Joe Pendeleton who, with the help of his guardian angel, is on the lookout for a new identity after accidentally being claimed by heaven before his time. The film, with its witty dialogue and stand-out performances, garnered seven Oscar nominations, including two wins for Best Original Story and Best Screenplay.

THE WINE

From grape grower Natale Seghesio and talented winemaker Paolo Sartirano (the dynamic duo behind our exciting Il Poeta Barolo), this new exclusive shows off the quality of Gavi, Piedmont’s finest white wine. Among the last of Piedmont’s traditional Masuè sharecroppers, the quality-driven Natale (aka Il Poeta, below) tends to his vines and writes a poem that tells the story of the vintage (check it out on the label). Paolo takes over in the cellar, and as you’ll taste, the final wine brims with vibrant citrus and orchard-fruit flavors.

THE GRAPE

Cortese is the grape of Gavi, one unique to Italy and grown almost exclusively in this area—it positively thrives in the region’s chalky limestone soils and cool maritime climate. And as this beauty shows, Paolo knows just how to coax out its delicate flavors and bright, zippy character. Produced originally to provide local Ligurian seafood restaurants with a refreshing, fish-friendly wine, Gavi has become one of the world’s most famous whites.

THE REGION

You’ll find Gavi in Piedmont, one of Italy’s most famous wine regions. Over half of its annual production is either DOC or DOCG, the highest Italian wine quality categories. Compare that statistic to regions in the south, where only 2% of production fits in those premium categories, and you realize that this is serious wine territory. Cortese is a top white variety here.

WITH FOOD

When it comes to pairing this lovely Gavi with a meal, you can’t go wrong with seafood dishes. Try fresh oysters with a squeeze of lemon, salt-and-pepper calamari or simple white fish like pistachio-lime mahi-mahi. This will also be delicious with creamy pasta dishes (with or without seafood). And, of course, feel free to enjoy it as a mouthwatering aperitif.
