J Opi Malbec Reserve 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Dodge City (1939)A perfect steak wine calls for an iconic western. This Technicolor classic stars Errol Flynn and tells the tale of a cattleman turned sheriff, who tames a lawless town. Known for its action, it features one of the best barroom brawls put to film. Directed by Michael Curtiz, it also stars Olivia de Havilland and Ann Sheridan.
THE WINE
Prized for its deep black-fruit flavor and velvety, ripe tannins, Malbec is the talk of red wine lovers everywhere. Crafted for you by the talented Opi Sadler, this premium Reserve is the luxury version of his best-selling signature Malbec and was aged for 15 months in French and American oak barrels. Gilbert & Gaillard judges rated it 92 points and award it a gold medal: “Elegant toasted smoke and vanilla on the nose with juicy forest fruits and spicy aromas…A shining rendition of Malbec.”
THE GRAPE
Although its original home was southwest France (where it made the dark and very tannic ‘black wines’ of Cahors), Malbec was once more common in Bordeaux’s Médoc appellation than Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, this French expat is enjoying superstar status in the mountains of Argentina, where bright sunshine and major altitude (the higher the better) ripen those tannins to perfection. It’s one of the most sought-after red wines of the moment—and it’s considered the new classic match for beef.
THE REGION
“There is no greater value in red wine anywhere in the world today than Argentine Malbec” (Wine Spectator). Vineyards are nestled in the ‘rain shadow’ of the Andes Mountains. Although this means precipitation is scarce, the vine growers use the abundance of melting mountain snow for irrigation. It’s a true vine-growing paradise that has turned Argentina into the world’s fifth-biggest wine producer.
WITH FOOD
In Argentina, the art of grilling meat is taken very seriously. No wonder Malbec has become one of the world’s most sought-after steak wines. Opi’s Reserve will be perfect with any cut (or even a juicy burger). Rib-eye, skirt steak with chimichurri, New York strip, etc. Try a cocoa powder rub (with paprika, brown sugar and cayenne) to play up the wine’s chocolatey notes.
