Marrying superstars Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting roles from Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, it offers luscious raspberry and blueberry aromas plus juicy plum and cherry flavors. Oh, 2020. It was a difficult year for many— especially grape growers in California, who had to contend with the specter of COVID-19 then devastating drought and wild fires. But despite these challenges, quality remains high. The lack of rainfall meant lower yields of better-concentrated fruit and early picking, so the wines that were made, like this red, are drinking deliciously.
The Style
As a category in the U.S., red blends like this one are extremely popular—and they’re still on the rise. But it’s by no means a new trend. For centuries, winemakers in Old World regions like Bordeaux, Rioja and Tuscany have known that melding different grapes together can result in a wine of greater complexity and finesse. It’s a great way to enjoy the best of many grapes, not just one.
With Food
Lush, full-bodied red blends like this James Dean tribute are incredibly food-friendly. Feel free to experiment to find your favorite pairing, but we suggest barbecue dishes. Burgers (beef, turkey, or black bean), saucy ribs, or even veggie kebabs will all be tasty. Roasted meats would be great when it’s too chilly to grill, as would hearty stews or chilis.
