La Chiamata 2020

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC, Italy

Classic Movie Pairing

Rome Adventure (1962)

Rossano Brazzi plays into his persona of suave Italian playboy in this tale of an American teacher who journeys to Europe to find love. Suzanne Pleshette stars opposite not only Brazzi, but Troy Donahue as a fellow American and aspiring architect, and Angie Dickinson as his former lover. This delicious, aromatic Trebbiano provides a zingy backdrop to this fun and memorable romance.

THE WINE

Rising star Ludovica Crugnale has answered la chiamata (‘the calling’) to craft wine in her native Abruzzo. And we’re seriously impressed with her latest creation, this gorgeous Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Ludovica crafted it with hand tended and hand harvested Trebbiano grapes, grown by local legend Signora Maria (below, right, with Ludovica). Boasting 90 points from Decanter and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, the wine offers “beautifully bright fruit, with a citrus driven aromatic profile.”

THE GROWER

Born in the small town of Guardiagrele, Signora Maria Elisii came to Ortona to work the grape harvest in the late 1950s. Women traditionally performed the harvest, selecting and cleaning grapes, then packaging them in special boxes to deliver to the cooperatives. In 1959, Maria married her husband, Antonio, and today, she and their son Graziano farm a precious, four-hectare vineyard. Though, these days, Maria’s grapes are reserved for limited-production releases like La Chiamata.

THE REGION

Located along central Italy’s Adriatic coast, Abruzzo benefits from sunny days, cool sea breezes, and a rugged, mountainous terrain—all of which conspire to produce ripe, fresh and distinctive grapes. The region is most famous for its star red and white: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, respectively. But you’ll also find a host of equally stunning, lesser-known native varieties here.

WITH FOOD

While you can absolutely enjoy this lovely Trebbiano as an aperitivo, like all fine Italian whites, it really comes into its own with food. Ludovica serves it with fish (try baked tilapia with a squeeze of lemon to play up the wine’s citrus notes) or summer salads (chicken Waldorf would be tasty). You could also pair it with creamy pastas, like pasta primavera or chicken alfredo.
