Wine Flavor Profile

La Cuadrilla de Sobreño is a medium- to full-bodied red wine with ripe currant, blueberry, blackberry and subtle vanilla aromas. The palate has similar flavors, with juicy-fresh acidity, silky tannins and a long, concentrated finish.

With its diverse regions, exciting native grape varieties and precious old bush vines, Spain is a treasure trove for wine lovers. Our Spanish wine expert, Sarah Everden, has unearthed a real gem for you in La Cuadrilla de Sobreño, a juicy Tinto del Toro from a pioneering, family-run winery.

Back in 1998, Roberto San Ildefonso left his native Rioja and established Bodegas Sobreño. At the time, Bodegas Sobreño was one of 10 registered wineries in Toro—making Roberto a true pioneer of the region. Why the move? He was inspired by region’s untapped potential. With its extreme climate and signature grape variety, Tinto del Toro (a clone of Tempranillo, Rioja’s star grape), Roberto knew the region could produce bold, powerful and beautifully structured wines.

Today, Roberto works alongside his daughter, Paloma, who is helping usher the bodega into the future by introducing sustainable and biodynamic viticulture practices. They farm 80 hectares (197 acres) of vineyards of bush vines, about half of which are over 45 years old. The older plants produce fewer, but more concentrated, grapes. Add in the Toro region’s long, hot summers and brilliant sunshine, and flavor dial goes way, way up…

Inspired by the pleasure of enjoying a great wine with a group of lifelong friends (a “cuadrilla” in Spanish), La Cuadrilla de Sobreño is a silky, juicy-fresh Tinto del Toro with ripe dark fruit and subtle vanilla flavors. The contributors at Wine International magazine rated it 90 points—and we bet it’ll earn equally high marks from your cuadrilla.
