Le Prince de Courthézon ‘Prestige’ Blanc 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
The Prince and the Showgirl (1957)This Grenache Blanc blend, with its expressive flavors, is a perfect complement to this romantic comedy starring Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. Directed by Olivier himself, the film tells the story of the mismatched love affair between a charming prince and a spirited showgirl during a diplomatic visit to London. Behind the screen tensions between the two stars don’t reveal themselves on screen, as the film received excellent reviews upon release and has gone on to become a romance classic.
THE WINE
While the southern Rhône may be most famous for its juicy, powerful reds, it’s also home to some of France’s most delicious whites. This gorgeous example comes from our old friend Thierry Ferlay, a Châteauneuf star who’s won more gold medals than any other winemaker in the region. The white version of his best-selling ‘Prestige’ cuvée, it marries Grenache Blanc (50%) with Roussanne (10%), Clairette (30%) and Viognier (10%). Boasting a gold medal from France’s largest competition, it brims with expressive floral aromas and luscious white peach flavors.
THE CELLAR
Founded in 1924, Le Cellier des Princes is Châteauneuf’s only growers’ co-op, known for its great-value, single-estate wines. Winemaker Thierry Ferlay (below, among his prized old vines) has worked extensively in the Rhône, across southern France and at a top Australian estate. He now crafts multiple medal-winning wines that combine ‘New World’ flair (the Aussie influence) with traditional ‘Old World’ methods (à la France).
THE REGION
The village of Courthézon lies just outside Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Rhône’s most famous appellation. The border is political, established to protect Châteauneuf prices. In vineyards on either side, you’ll find the same soil and sloping lines of low- yielding old vines as well as flavor-boosting galet stones, natural radiators that trap heat and release it to the vines at night.
WITH FOOD
While you can uncork this beautiful white any day of the week, we recommend saving it for a special meal. Whenever you enjoy it, serve alongside equally full-flavored foods, such as grilled chicken, baked white fish or pork chops. This is also a great choice for vegetarians. Try it with creamy mushroom risotto or even difficult-to-match roasted veggies like white asparagus.
