Marx Brothers Pinot Gris 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Animal Crackers (1930)One will not be disappointed in pairing this vibrant Pinot Gris with an equally spirited comedy form the Marx Brothers. In an adaptation of their Broadway play, the plot revolves around a house party and an art heist, but like all the brothers’ films, the story plays second fiddle to the comedy. Directed by Mack Sennett veteran Victor Heerman, the three icons—Groucho, Harpo and Chico—are joined onscreen by brother Zeppo.
THE WINE
The Marx Brothers have kept audiences laughing for over a century, and like a fine wine, they only get better with age. From their early days in vaudeville and their time as the toast of Broadway, they went on to become the most iconic team of Hollywood’s Golden Age. As delightful as the brothers, their namesake Pinot Gris hails from California’s exciting Paso Robles region (read more below). Fresh from the 2021 vintage, it offers vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavors.
THE GRAPE
While it’s grown all over the globe, Pinot Gris’ spiritual home is northern Italy, where it’s called Pinot Grigio. There, it produces light- to medium-bodied wines with crisp citrus- and orchard-fruit flavors, often with a hint of nuttiness. In Alsace, France, Pinot Gris is made in a fuller-bodied style that suits the rich foods locals enjoy. Many New World regions are now experimenting with the variety—here in the U.S., Oregon, Washington and, of course, California produce delicious versions of both styles.
THE REGION
This elegant Pinot Gris hails from Paso Robles, one of the Golden State’s warmest and most exciting regions for full-flavored, top-value wines. Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish calls it “one of California’s most dynamic regions.” The name Paso Robles, meaning ‘Passage of the Oaks,’ comes from Spanish Franciscan monks, who were the first to plant vineyards here in 1797.
WITH FOOD
With its delightfully ripe fruit flavors, this lovely Pinot Gris makes a delicious treat all on its own. However, it will really shine with seafood dishes. Try seared scallops, fresh crab or Pacific Northwest salmon. Though, chicken, ham or turkey will work well, too. For a tasty vegetarian match, serve it alongside simple buttered pasta or your favorite salads.
