Marx Brothers Pinot Noir 2021

Monterey County, California

Classic Movie Pairing

Duck Soup (1933)

Today celebrated as a fan favorite, the Marx Brothers’ last major release for Paramount was originally a flop. It was also the last of the Brothers’ films to feature all four siblings. The youngest of the group, Zeppo, wouldn’t join the others as they left for better fortunes at MGM. This tasty Pinot Noir is the perfect salute to the brothers in their final showing as a quartet at what may be their most irreverent and fun.

THE WINE

The Marx Brothers have kept audiences laughing for over a century. And like a fine wine, they only get better with age. From their early days in vaudeville to their time as the toast of Broadway, they went on to become the most iconic comedy team of Hollywood’s Golden Age. As captivating as the brothers, this refreshing Pinot Noir hails from cool Monterey County (read more below). Look forward to ripe red berry and intriguing baking spice notes. Delicious on its own and even better with food.

THE GRAPE

Nicknamed “The Heartbreak Grape,” Pinot Noir is infamously difficult to grow. The same thin skin that’s responsible for giving the wines their trademark pale color also renders the grape susceptible to vineyard maladies and damage from harsh weather. Pinot ripens early and thrives in cool climates—while its spiritual homeland is the Côte d’Or in France’s Burgundy, it has found a delicious new character in cooler corners of New Zealand, Oregon and California, all of which produce world-class Pinot.

THE REGION

Monterey’s a bit different than other nearby regions. Rainfall is low, but the underground Salinas River provides water to the vines. The sunnier areas also enjoy some of California’s longest growing seasons. Grapes have a longer ‘hang time’ on the vines, which helps develop more complex aromas and flavors. Cooling breezes funneled in from Monterey Bay seal in freshness and prevent over-ripening.

WITH FOOD

For a refreshing twist, you could try sticking this lively Pinot Noir in the fridge for about 30 minutes. It makes a delightful aperitif. When you’re ready for a meal, Pinot is famously food- friendly, so feel free to experiment. Grilled salmon, grain-based salads and fried chicken will be tasty warm-weather matches. In the cooler months, go for roasted turkey, tuna steaks or vegetarian stews.
