Number Ten 2020

Península de Setúbal, Portugal

Classic Movie Pairing

Lord Jim (1965)

On the heels of Lawrence of Arabia, Peter O’Toole decided to revisit the role of a quiet but tormented hero in a land far from home. Initially passed over by audiences due to its measured pacing, it can today be appreciated for its boldness of vision. Directed by Richard Brooks, it was shot in Hong Kong, Singapore and at Angkor Wat in Cambodia under the talented eye of cinematographer Freddie Young. Pair it with a robust and sophisticated
red blend.

THE WINE

“This Portuguese red is so rich and full bodied, you can’t even tell it’s low alcohol!” You’ll see what our expert, Jehan Sacaze, means when you taste Number Ten for yourself. Named for its lighter alcohol level (only 10% ABV), Number Ten was made for you by Jaime Quendera, the talent behind many of our best-selling Portuguese reds. Made from native grapes and aged for six months in fine oak barrels, it boasts a Gilbert & Gaillard gold medal plus layers of juicy black fruit and vanilla-spice. And its lower alcohol also means fewer calories—about 400 per bottle (a 15% ABV red has over 600). So, you can pour a little more generously.

THE WINERY

Through his deft skill with Portugal’s native grapes as well as international varieties, Jaime (pictured below) has helped to bring the country’s superb dry reds into the mainstream. He performs his magic at the Cooperativa de Pegões, which was founded in 1958. Between Jaime and the other talents who work there, the co-op has won over 500 awards in the last 10 years.

THE COUNTRY

In recent years, Portugal’s boutique estates have modernized—and their wines have impressed critics like Wine Spectator’s Matt Kramer: “Portugal is now gushing with stunning wines —and yes, stunning deals. Call me a value hound, but except for a tiny handful of reach-for-the-sky wines, Portugal very likely now offers some of the greatest wine values on the market.”

WITH FOOD

Thanks to its deliciously bold flavors and lighter alcohol, Number Ten is easy to sip on its own (or alongside firm, aged cheeses like Cheddar or Parmesan). At meal time, it’ll shine alongside equally flavorful meals. Think juicy steaks, roasted pork and other hearty meats. For a tasty vegetarian match, try root-vegetable stews, quinoa bowls or grilled veggie kebabs.
