On The Line Chenin Blanc 2023
Classic Movie Pairing
Strangers on a Train (1951)This exciting Chenin Blanc’s name was inspired by the suspense of a ball hitting the line during a game of tennis. What better to pair it with than this suspenseful favorite from director Alfred Hitchcock, in which Farley Granger stars as a professional tennis player who unexpectedly finds himself entwined in a murder after a chance meeting. A fan favorite, the thriller is remembered not only for its memorable plot but also for its set design and engaging cinematography by Robert Burks, who would be nominated for an Academy Award.
THE WINE
Any tennis player will tell you there’s a great sense of relief when the ball falls on the line. Whether a perfect volley or just plain luck, the satisfaction is guaranteed. Inspired by that exciting moment, On The Line Chenin Blanc will offer you the same amount of delight and glee. Ripened to perfection under the California sunshine (which is as much a boon to tennis lovers as it is to wine grapes), On The Line offers fresh green fruit and orange blossom aromas plus ripe pear and green apple flavors. Enjoy with partners and opponents alike. Cheers!
THE GRAPE
Originally from France’s Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc thrives across the globe, especially in South Africa (which holds over half the world’s plantings) and California. Along with crisp, dry whites like On The Line, this versatile grape variety can also produce off-dry, dessert and sparkling wines. When left unoaked (as here), it offers lovely floral and ripe citrus and orchard-fruit notes, but when aged in oak, it develops a creamy/buttery character.
THE REGION
Lodi is “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). While the region’s famed for old-vine Zinfandel, it’s increasingly known for other top-notch reds and whites. The warm climate is tempered by morning fog, helping prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine, for extra-concentrated flavors.
WITH FOOD
While you can absolutely enjoy this exclusive Chenin Blanc as an aperitif, it’ll really shine with food. For a lighter meal, serve it alongside soft cheeses, crudités or simple chicken or tuna salad sandwiches. When you want something heartier, go for seafood dishes (we love baked haddock or seared scallops), roasted chicken or herbed pork chops.
