Palacio del Conde Gran Selección 2015

Valencia DO, Spain

Classic Movie Pairing

Adventures of Don Juan (1948)

Be seduced by this spicy Tempranillo while swashbuckling Errol Flynn falls for Viveca Lindfors’ Spanish Queen in Adventures of Don Juan. The film’s legendary hero originated in the south of Spain and makes the perfect suitor for this charming and toasty Valencia red. Don Juan’s climactic sword fight with the Duke de Lorca (Robert Douglas) pairs superbly with such a dynamic vintage.

THE WINE

Spain’s wine scene is “among the most vibrant, dynamic and creative in the world” (Tim Atkin, MW). And we’ve sent you a delicious demonstration in Maria Angeles Camara’s sensational Gran Selección. Crafted with hand picked, old-vine fruit from the great 2015 vintage, it was aged 30 months in American oak barrels—nearly double the legal requirement. That translates to extra mellow, toasty flavors in your glass. No wonder it wins major awards, vintage after vintage.

THE ACCLAIM

Palacio del Conde hails from Maria’s home base winery, Bodega La Viña. Founded in 1945, it’s one of Valencia’s most important cellars, whose wines are regularly praised in Spain’s premier Guía Peñín guide. Going all the way back to the 2005 release, Palacio del Conde Gran Selección boasts major awards from many of the world’s most prestigious competitions. The previous release scooped two gold medals, and this 2015 edition has won a gold medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.

THE REGION

Known as ‘Madrid-by-the-Sea,’ the coastal region of Valencia is where stylish Madrileños head to relax seaside. The region’s hot summers, wet winters, and rich soils produce excellent wines, but that’s not all you’ll find here. It’s also filled with orange groves and known as the rice capital of Spain. No wonder paella (the famous saffron-infused dish of rice, seafood, meat, and veggies) was invented here.

WITH FOOD

As noted on the back label, Maria suggests letting this fine red breathe in a decanter for an hour or so before serving. She also recommends pairing Palacio del Conde with red meat dishes or strong cheese. We like lamb—go for lamb meatballs in an earthy mushroom sauce or simply seasoned and grilled chops. Another winning match? A hearty bowl of paella, of course.
