Pescadero Rock Albariño 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Planet of the Apes (1968)The original film in a franchise that continues to fascinate audiences, this Charlton Heston-led science fiction classic about a crew of astronauts who crash land on an ape-dominated planet still packs a punch today. The movie was loosely adapted from the 1963 novel by French writer Pierre Boulle, who also authored The Bridge over the River Kwai (published in 1952) and used his wartime experience as a Japanese POW to inform both works. Regardless of its background, the film is as pleasing as this zesty white wine is flavorful.
The Wine
White-wine lovers are in for a real treat with this new exclusive. Albariño might be a major star in Spain, but this exciting white grape variety has also found a happy home in California, as you’ll taste here. Named in honor of its beautiful coastal origins, Pescadero Rock hails from the cool (in every sense) Edna Valley and the great 2019 vintage. Crisp and elegant, it delivers vibrant peach, pear, and apple flavors, with a classic salty/mineral note on the finish. Guaranteed to refresh on its own or with food – see over for our favorite pairings.
The Grape
Hailed by Master of Wine Jancis Robinson as a “fashionable, high-quality, fresh, aromatic variety,” Albariño is Spain’s flagship white. It’s quickly gained a following, making appearances on trendy wine lists nationwide. It’s now also grown in the cooler-climate regions of California and Oregon. The grape’s faint, salty tang is rather unique, but its refreshing character is reminiscent of top-notch Rieslings.
The Region
Most valleys run north to south. But the chilly Edna Valley, which sits 5.4 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, runs east to west. This rare configuration helps funnel cooling ocean breezes into the valley’s vineyards. The shifting air also brings frequent fog and provides a natural cooling system, keeping temperatures unusually low – the perfect climate for growing world-class Albariño.
With Food
Enjoy a lightly chilled glass of Pescadero Rock whenever you want to feel refreshed. It makes a wonderful aperitif. At meal time, pair this lovely Albariño with seafood, such as grilled tilapia or seared scallops. It’ll also be delicious alongside white meats (we suggest roasted chicken or pork chops with a pear reduction) or a plate of crudités and goat cheese.
