Pillastro Nero 2018
Classic Movie Pairing
A Place in the Sun (1951)This wine’s southern Italian Cabernet Sauvignon and Primitivo grapes had plenty of time in the sun, lending ripe fruit flavors to the bottle. The onscreen romance (and offscreen friendship) between stars Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor is similarly ripe, with director George Stevens guiding their passions all the way to a well-deserved Oscar win. Based on Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy, and costarring a young Shelley Winters as a doomed factory worker, the movie has been highly acclaimed by audiences and critics since its release.
The Wine
Angelo Maci’s Pillastro wines are some of the most popular, best-selling Italians in our cellar. We’re thrilled to introduce his Pillastro Nero – a true ‘black red’ from the label to the super-rich wine inside. It was crafted from carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Primitivo (40%), grown on Angelo’s 80-yearold alberello vines (during the stellar 2018 vintage, no less). Back in the winery, six months in fine oak barrels adds sweet spice and toasty oak notes to the ripe, black- and bramble-fruit flavors.
The Celler
Cantine Due Palme is on a serious hot streak. Thanks to their star winemaker Angelo (below), they have been voted southern Italy’s Winery of the Year an impressive three times by judges at Vinitaly – and Angelo himself boasts three Winemaker of the Year titles! He’s so passionate about quality, Angelo is also spearheading a campaign to preserve the region’s precious, old alberello bush vines (like the ones that produced this red) from being ripped up and replaced with younger plants.
The Region
Puglia is one of Italy’s prime newwave wine sources, delivering terrific value for money,” writes UK newspaper The Times. With plentiful sun and those miserly (flavor-boosting) old vines, this southern region was well-placed for the winemaking revolution that’s occurred here in recent decades. The huge success of Angelo’s estate has really helped boost Puglia’s international reputation.
With Food
This bold, richly flavored Cabernet-Primitivo can stand up to equally fullflavored meals. Angelo recommends enjoying it alongside roast shoulder of lamb, grilled steaks, or other savory red meats. It’s also a delicious partner for hearty pasta dishes. Try classic spaghetti and meatballs, eggplant Parmigiana, or traditional lasagna (with or without meat).
