Pillastro Primitivo 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Three Coins in the Fountain (1954)This sumptuous red blend comes from the south of Italy, but its exuberant fruity qualities pair perfectly with charming romantic drama Three Coins in the Fountain, shot on location in Rome in spectacular Cinemascope. At once dark and charming, like Italian playboy Dino (Louis Jourdan), with notes of oak and vanilla, like the poor but noble Giorgio (Rossano Brazzi), this is a lush and lovely wine for a magical film.
THE WINE
Fruit-rich and charming, Primitivo is the godfather of southern Italian grapes—and Pillastro is a hit with all who try it. Made for you by three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci, Pillastro’s pedigree boasts over 60 awards—including a gold medal from the American Wine Awards and 90 Gilbert & Gaillard points for this sumptuous 2020 release. Judges raved, “The palate is smooth, soft and lingering with restrained heat that promotes very juicy fruit…Beautiful.”
THE GRAPE
DNA testing has proved that Primitivo is identical to California’s red star, Zinfandel. As with any globe-trotting grapes though, wines ultimately reflect their origin (and, with world-class gems like
this, the deft touch of a talented winemaker). True to the ‘primi’ in its name, Primitivo ripens early in Puglia’s hot, dry climate, and the region’s ancient vines produce intensely concentrated
flavors. Angelo selects the best fruit and ages the wine in fine oak for extra depths of flavor.
THE REGION
“Puglia is one of Italy’s prime new-wave wine sources, delivering terrific value for money,” writes UK newspaper The Times. With plentiful sun and those miserly (flavor-boosting) old vines, this southern region was well placed for the winemaking revolution that’s occurred here in recent decades. The huge success of Angelo’s estate has really helped boost Puglia’s international reputation.
WITH FOOD
Full of lush raspberry, plum, spicy vanilla and mocha, this charmer is a treat on its own, though it’s just as delightful with Italian fare. In Puglia, they’d raise a glass with favorites like orecchiette alla Barese (the region’s signature ear- shaped pasta with broccoli rabe), cutteridde (oven- braised lamb with greens) and braciolini (beef rolls). Grilled pork chops would also be delicious.
