Pino Pino Pinot Noir 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Mrs. Miniver (1942)An elegant wine calls for a dignified role. Greer Garson won an Academy Award, one of six for this wartime film, as the namesake heroine who perseveres with her family on the British homefront as the Blitz rages around them. Directed by William Wyler and also starring Walter Pidgeon, it is as powerful a statement now as when it was first released.
The Wine
When wine lovers think of Italian “Pinot,” most immediately think Pinot Grigio. But here’s a fun fact for explorers: Italy also produces some fabulous (and hard to find) Pinot Noir, which they call Pinot Nero. When we tasted the playfully named Pino Pino – a riff on the Italian word for “pine tree” – we knew it was made for our customers. From skilled winemaker Simone Cortese (the talent at Barone Montalto, an estate that has scooped Vinitaly’s coveted Gran Menzione prize) and the cool Pavia region, it offers everything Pinot Noir fans crave. Look forward to ripe red berry flavors, delicate floral/spice notes, and a smooth-as-silk texture.
The Grape
The thin-skinned Pinot Noir grape is difficult to grow. It ripens early, and when cultivated where temperatures get too warm or too cool, winemakers have to work extra hard to make sure it retains its charming finesse. While at home on the famed slopes of the Côte d’Or in Burgundy, it has found a delicious new character in cooler corners of New Zealand, California, and Italy (as you’ll taste).
The Region
Located in northern Italy, Pavia is the westernmost province of the Lombardy region and borders premium Piedmont (home to famous red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco). Pavia benefits from a moderate climate and the cooling influence of nearby mountains and rivers, ideal conditions for growing finicky Pinot Noir. Sangiovese, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are also grown here.
With Food
Chill your bottle of Pino Pino in the fridge for about 30 minutes before pouring. It’ll make the ripe fruit flavors even more refreshing, whether you enjoy it as an aperitivo or with food. Delicious pairings include tomato-sauced pastas, meaty fish (we love salmon or sea bass with heirloom tomato bruschetta), or even roasted white meats like Thanksgiving turkey or grilled chicken.
