Portinho do Côvo 2020

Península de Setúbal IGP, Portugal

Classic Movie Pairing

Mean Streets (1973)

Rich and fulfilling, previous vintages of this hearty red have been multi-award winners. The deft skill behind this finely crafted wine matches well with Martin Scorsese’s break-out film featuring career-making performances by Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.

The Wine

Crafted by one of Portugal’s elite winemakers, Jaime Quendera, this luscious red showcases Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet (star Portuguese grapes) and international Syrah. The inaugural release was rated ‘Best in Class’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and a previous vintage won a double-gold medal at the China Wine & Spirits Awards. Made with grapes harvested from vineyards first planted in the 1900s (between Lisbon and the harbor of Porto Côvo), the new 2020 edition brims with ripe black fruit and has a rich, full body.

The Country

In recent years, Portugal’s previously little-known, boutique estates have modernized—and their world-class wines are starting to catch the attention of critics like Wine Spectator’s Matt Kramer: “Portugal is now gushing with stunning wines—and yes, stunning deals. Call me a value hound, but except for a tiny handful of reach-for-the-sky wines, Portugal very likely now offers some of the greatest wine values on the market today.”

The Estate

Through his deft skill with Portugal’s unique native grapes as well as international varieties, Jaime (pictured left) has really helped to bring Portugal’s superb dry reds into the mainstream. He works his magic at top estate Casa Ermelinda Freitas, whose owner, fourth-generation Leonor, was named ‘Comendadora’ (the equivalent of knighthood) by the government for her services to the wine industry.

With Food

This rich, rounded, and mouth-filling red will make a fantastic match for equally hearty meat dishes. If you’re a barbecue fan, everything from saucy pork ribs to juicy sausages will work deliciously. Yankee pot roast or braised venison loin would also be great. Vegetarian? Try Portinho do Côvo with a black bean (or portobello mushroom) burger.
