Portinho do Côvo Branco 2022

Vinho Regional Península de Setúbal, Portugal

Classic Movie Pairing

The Black Stallion (1979)

From grapes grown in seaside vineyards under cool ocean breezes, this white blend shines. It pairs well with this classic story of a boy and his horse whose relationship was also born along the sea. A refreshing tale, The Black Stallion was directed by Carroll Ballard, produced by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Kelly Reno and Mickey Rooney.

THE WINE

Crafted at the historic Cooperativa de Pegões by renowned winemaker Jaime Quendera, Portinho do Côvo is a dazzling example of Portugal’s modern whites. It marries three native varieties—zingy Verdelho, aromatic Fernão Pires and well- structured Antão Vaz—grown in seaside vineyards, where brilliant sunshine and cool ocean breezes help the grapes ripen to perfection. A previous release won a double-gold medal from the China Wine & Spirits Awards. This 2022 edition overflows with equally lovely floral/citrus notes and will shine with seafood.

THE COUNTRY

In recent years, Portugal’s previously little- known, boutique estates have modernized—and their world-class wines are starting to catch the attention of critics like Wine Spectator’s Matt Kramer: “Portugal is now gushing with stunning wines—and yes, stunning deals. Call me a value hound, but except for a tiny handful of reach-for-the-sky wines, Portugal very likely now offers some of the greatest wine values on the market today.”

THE WINERY

Through his deft skill with Portugal’s unique native grapes as well as international varieties, Jaime (pictured left) has really helped to bring Portugal’s superb dry reds into the mainstream. He works his magic at the Cooperativa de Pegões, which was founded in 1958. Between Jaime and the other talents that work there, the cooperative has won over 500 major awards in the last 10 years.

WITH FOOD

Take inspiration from Portinho do Côvo’s seaside origins and pair it with your favorite seafood dishes. Jaime suggests serving it with lighter white fish, like the local Portuguese staple bacalhau (dried and salted cod). This will also be delicious alongside Mediterranean lentil salads or simple grilled chicken. And, of course, it makes a refreshing aperitif.
