Purezza 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Roman Holiday (1953)Purezza means purity in Italian—a perfect match for the film’s themes of innocence and love. Starring Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, and directed by William Wyler, the movie’s charming and delightful nature nicely complements this smooth and silky Italian red blend. The plot follows a European princess who escapes her duties to experience Rome while falling in love with an American journalist. Roman Holiday won three Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Audrey Hepburn.
THE WINE
Ready for pure delight? That’s exactly what you’ll taste in Purezza. This silky-smooth red is crafted by the Liantonio family, who has made world-class wines in southern Italy’s Puglia region for 75 years. They’re also leaders in sustainability—their Torrevento estate received Gambero Rosso’s Special Prize for Viticultural Sustainability and is Equalitas certified—meaning it’s environmentally, ethically and economically sustainable. Made from organically grown Nero di Troia and Primitivo grapes, Purezza brims with fresh violet and ripe berry notes.
THE GRAPE
Also called Uva di Troia, Nero di Troia is one of the oldest-known grape varieties in Puglia, characterized by firm tannins and a rich, fruity core. Its name is in reference to the Puglian village of Troia, founded by the Greek warrior Diomedes after he sacked Troy. Here, it’s blended with Primitivo, another star local grape that produces smooth, concentrated wines. As you’ll taste, they’ve come together to make a seriously delicious wine in Purezza.
THE REGION
With plentiful sunshine and well- established plantings of indigenous grapes, Puglia was well-placed for the winemaking revolution that’s occurred here in the last few years. Critics have also been taking notice: “Puglia, the southerly heel of Italy’s boot, excels at producing affordable yet distinct quality wines from its three signature red grapes: Uva di Troia, Primitivo and Negroamaro” (Wine Spectator).
WITH FOOD
Given its delightfully silky, fruit- forward style, Purezza makes a lovely red-wine aperitif. When you’re ready for a meal, take inspiration from its Italian homeland. A big plate of antipasto (think cured meats and firm cheeses), tomato-sauced pastas or your favorite pizza would all be delicious pairings. You could also enjoy it with beef, pork or dark-meat poultry.
