Queen Bee Viognier 2022

Western Cape WO, South Africa

Classic Movie Pairing

Carmen Jones (1954)

A bold Viognier can stand a little heat and so can this movie’s title character, played by the unforgettable Dorothy Dandridge. A queen bee herself, Carmen is an independent woman who does as she pleases. Otto Preminger’s film moves the setting of Bizet’s classic opera, Carmen, from Spain to the American South, and it has since become a cultural landmark in its own right: Dandridge became the first African-American to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar.

THE WINE

Master of Wine Tim Atkin writes that “for wine lovers, South Africa offers something special.” And when you taste this gorgeous white, you’ll understand what he means. Crafted at Journey’s End, aka the Drinks Business 2021 Ethical Company of the Year, Queen Bee showcases just how well the Viognier grape thrives here. After tasting the 2020 vintage, Decanter’s Fiona Beckett raved about its “seductive peaches-and-cream character” and remarked that it’s “a great wine to give someone who’s never tasted Viognier before.” We wholeheartedly agree—and the new edition is every bit as delectable.

THE GRAPE

Viognier makes some of the world’s most opulent whites. And to think: a little over 20 years ago (after being torn up in favor of more ‘fashionable’ varieties), it was down to just a few acres of vineyards in its home, Condrieu in France’s Northern Rhône Valley. Happily, it’s enjoying a resurgence, as winemakers and wine lovers everywhere embrace its heady fruity/floral character.

THE REGION

South Africa has the most beautiful vineyards of any region in the world—and her wines can be just as stunning. “The fine wines of South Africa deserve much more attention than they receive” (JancisRobinson.com). Well, we’re paying attention— in the last decade or so, the number of premium, boutique estates has increased greatly, providing the enthusiast with even more territory to explore.

WITH FOOD

With its lovely floral/fruity character and full body, Viognier just might be one of the most satisfying whites to sip solo. But we also like it with equally flavorful foods. Grilled or roasted chicken is a classic match, as are weighty seafood dishes like lobster or seared scallops. Viognier can also stand a little heat, so don’t be afraid to pair it with spicy noodle bowls or Latin-inspired cuisine.
