Rex Mundi Shiraz Grenache 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Scarface (1932)For a red named after the god of chaos, go with the original gangster classic from producer Howard Hughes. Unlike other famous crime films of the 1930s, which were fictional products of the studio system, Scarface was a renegade independent production that drew obvious parallels between its on-screen antihero (played by Paul Muni in a commanding performance) and his real-life inspiration, Al Capone. Director Howard Hawks created a richly designed and beautifully photographed film that echoes the wine’s savory black-fruit notes.
THE WINE
Black as night and totally irresistible, Rex Mundi is a decadent, lip-staining discovery. Master winemaker Hervé Sabardeil (the talent behind our best-selling Cabalié wines) crafted it with fabulously intense Shiraz and Grenache grapes grown on craggy peaks in southern France. Back in the Middle Ages, these inhospitable rocky hills were inhabited by the Cathars, who lived in awe of Rex Mundi, the evil god of chaos who corrupted the faithful with promises of earthly pleasures. Boasting a Gilbert & Gaillard gold medal, this bold red brims with spicy dark-fruit flavors.
THE REGION
One of the oldest wine regions in France, Pays d’Oc traces its history back to the fifth century, when the Greeks planted the first vineyards near Narbonne. With nearly 750,000 acres of vineyards, it’s three times the size of Bordeaux and the world’s largest vineyard area. Its wines offer fruit rich flavors and a distinct freshness, thanks to the warm sunshine and cool Mediterranean breezes that help grapes ripen to perfection.
THE GRAPES
Shiraz and Grenache are two of the southern Rhône Valley’s great red grapes, and they often star together in the opulent, pricey reds of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They also thrive in the rocky, sun drenched vineyards of the Pays d’Oc region. Syrah imparts dark berry and savory, peppery notes to this wine, while the Grenache gives juicy red-fruit flavors. A delicious combo.
WITH FOOD
This deep, dark red demands an equally rich food pairing. Serve it alongside flavorful meat—from saucy barbecue ribs to roast rack of lamb to your favorite cut of steak. You could also pair it with meaty, tomato-sauced pasta dishes or hearty stews or chilis (made with or without meat). And fans of big, smooth reds will enjoy sipping Rex Mundi solo, too.
