Classic Movie Pairing

How the West Was Won (1962)

An epic red for an epic Western. Finding themselves in competition with the rising popularity of TV, movie studios decided to go big. And there are few movies bigger than this: the first feature shot for Cinerama that tells the story of three generations of Western pioneers. It showcases a cavalcade of stars including Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart and John Wayne (and many, many more). Costing an astounding 15 million dollars and having three directors, it went on to win three Academy Awards.

THE WINE

With a century of expertise, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is one of Portugal’s most iconic estates. And Rocksand will show you why. It hails from the sandy Fernando Pó vineyard, where hot days ripen grapes to perfection and cool nights and coastal breezes help retain freshness. Aged for four months in French and American oak barrels, Rocksand is presented in a traditional, stout bottle and boasts a history of gold-medal acclaim. Gilbert & Gaillard judges praised a previous vintage for its “expressive nose intermixing redcurrant, cherry, fine spices and violet with subtle oak influence.” The 2021 release is every bit as impressive.

THE COUNTRY

In recent years, Portugal’s previously little- known, boutique estates have modernized—and their world-class wines are starting to catch the attention of critics like Wine Spectator’s Matt Kramer: “Portugal is now gushing with stunning wines—and yes, stunning deals…Portugal very likely now offers some of the greatest wine values on the market today.”

THE ESTATE

Casa Ermelinda Freitas was founded by Deonilde Freitas in 1920. Today, it has grown to 120 hectares and produces some of Portugal’s finest wines. Proprietor Leonor Freitas (left) works tirelessly to ensure that each bottle meets her rigorous quality standards. Her efforts have been well rewarded— Mundus Vini judges named the estate their “Best Producer from Portugal” in 2021.

WITH FOOD

Fans of smooth, full-bodied reds will enjoy sipping Rocksand all on its own. But if you’re ready for a meal, we have some suggestions. This rich red will shine with pork, from local chouriço (sausage) to bacon-wrapped tenderloin. It’ll be equally delicious with beef or lamb dishes. For a tasty vegetarian match, try feijoada (a bean soup) or hearty casseroles.
