Salvatore Trimboli 2019

New South Wales, Australia

Classic Movie Pairing

Force of Evil (1949)

A big red calls for a rich, engrossing story. This hearty slice of film noir fits the bill, with John Garfield in one of his most memorable roles: Joe Morse, an attorney caught between family loyalty and his racketeer boss. Directed by Abraham Polonsky, this revered crime film also stars Beatrice Pearson and Thomas Gomez and has become a favorite of the genre.

The Wine

After years of working for one of Australia’s top estates, renowned winemaker Salvatore ‘Sam’ Trimboli has struck out on his own. And we’re thrilled to bring you his signature red. Inspired by the eight Salvatores in the Trimboli family tree, it marries dark-fruited Malbec (60%) with Shiraz (Australia’s flagship red, 30%) and Durif (Sam’s favorite variety, 10%). Thanks to New South Wales’ hot, dry growing season, the grapes achieved serious ripeness, which translates to major concentration in your glass. Look forward to luscious berry flavors, supported by toasty spice notes from four months’ aging in French oak barrels.

The Winemaker

Born in southern Italy’s Calabria region, but raised near Sydney, Sam (below, showing off his custom ‘Durif’ license plate) fell in love with Australian wine culture at an early age. And as a young man, he learned the winemaking ropes from some of the country’s biggest names. Today, Sam’s trophy cabinet boasts nearly 30 international trophies and just shy of 400 national awards.

The Region

New South Wales is the birthplace of Australian wine. The original grape vines arrived with the First Fleet and were planted at Sydney Cove in 1788. Today, New South Wales accounts for about 30% of the country’s wine production. It’s a large, diverse region, with cool climates along the eastern coast and warmer, drier areas (like the famed Hunter Valley) on the west side of the Great Dividing Range.

With Food

In Australia, they love to barbecue, and Sam is no exception. He recommends pairing this rich red with juicy burgers, saucy ribs, veggie kebabs, or your favorite cut of steak. If it’s too chilly to grill (a problem the Aussies rarely have), try a classic meat pie or roasted lamb. Or, take inspiration from Sam’s Italian heritage and serve with hearty pasta dishes.
