Salvatore Trimboli Trebbiano 2022
Classic Movie Pairing
3 Godfathers (1948)The idea of a holiday film typically conjures up snowy thoughts, but this perennial classic is set in a sprawling desert. Starring John Wayne, Harry Carey Jr. and Pedro Armendáriz, it tells the Christmastime story of three bank robbers turned heroes when they rescue a baby and shepherd the infant to safety across blazing sands with a sheriff hot on their backs. The Western pairs perfectly with this Australian white that has a deep flavor concentration born out of its grapes’ hot, dry growing season.
THE WINE
After years of working for one of Australia’s top estates, Salvatore ‘Sam’ Trimboli has struck out on his own. And we’re thrilled to bring you his lovely white. Inspired by the eight Salvatores in the Trimboli family tree, it’s pure Trebbiano (aka Ugni Blanc). Thanks to New South Wales’ hot, dry growing season, the grapes achieved serious ripeness and flavor concentration. Four months in French oak barrels imparted a creamy, nutty nuance to the ripe lemon notes. It’s one of the most elegant, complex Trebbianos we’ve tasted—and boasts a BIG national trophy, 95 points and three gold medals (so far!) to prove it.
THE WINEMAKER
Born in southern Italy’s Calabria region, but raised near Sydney, Sam (below, enjoying a glass of his Trebbiano with lunch) fell in love with Australian wine culture at an early age. And as a young man, he learned the winemaking ropes from some of the country’s biggest names. Today, Sam’s trophy cabinet boasts nearly 30 international trophies and just shy of 400 national awards.
THE REGION
New South Wales is the birthplace of Australian wine. The original grape vines arrived with the First Fleet and were planted at Sydney Cove in 1788. Today, New South Wales accounts for about 30% of the country’s wine production. It’s a large, diverse region, with cool climates along the eastern coast and warmer, drier areas (like the famed Hunter Valley) on the west side of the Great Dividing Range.
WITH FOOD
The Trimboli family would serve this vibrant Trebbiano with classic Italian fare. We suggest white pizza (perhaps topped with prosciutto, arugula and Gorgonzola) or creamy pastas like chicken alfredo or pasta primavera. You could also pair it with seafood dishes. Go for baked white fish, try seared scallops or throw some shrimp on the ‘barbie.’
