Sealicious Gewürztraminer 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Billy Budd (1962)One sip of this white and you'll find yourself transported to the Pacific coastline. Crisp and fresh with a vibrant citrus flair, Sealicious Gewürztraminer deserves a nautical pairing. This retelling of the Herman Melville classic features Peter Ustinov as a sea captain who is caught in an unenviable position of needing to enforce naval justice against the likable (but ill-fortuned) Billy Bud, played by Terrance Stamp.
THE WINE
California’s Monterey County is home to brilliant seaside attractions—a world-class aquarium, Cannery Row and seafood restaurants galore. It’s also the inspiration behind this elegant Gewürztraminer (read more on this interesting grape below). If you can’t make it to the ocean right now, Sealicious will bring the beach to you. Crisp and fresh, this elegant white offers waves of vibrant citrus fruit, ripe lychee and classic rose petal flavors. One sip and you’ll be transported to the Pacific Ocean. All that’s missing is a plate of your favorite seafood!
THE GRAPE
Though difficult to spell and say, Gewürztraminer (pronounced guh-VERTZ-truh-mee-ner) is easy to love. Originally from France’s Alsace region, this pink-skinned grape variety has found a happy home in California, northern Italy, Germany, Hungary, Australia’s Clare Valley and other cool-climate areas around the world. It produces highly aromatic white wines, with trademark lychee, rose petal and spice notes.
THE REGION
Monterey’s a bit different than other nearby regions. Rainfall is low, but the underground Salinas River provides water to the vines. The sunnier areas also enjoy some of California’s longest growing seasons. Grapes here have a longer ‘hang time’ on the vines, which helps develop more complex aromas and flavors. Cooling breezes from Monterey Bay seal in freshness and prevent over-ripening.
WITH FOOD
With a name like Sealicious, this Gewürztraminer is obviously a perfect match for seafood. Crab cakes, fried calamari, baked white fish…the seafood menu is your oyster! If you’d rather go for “turf” over “surf,” try soft cheeses or grilled white meats. This Gewürztraminer’s fruity flavors will also pair well with mildly spicy dishes, like ceviche or Asian noodle bowls.
