Seekat Bay Chenin Blanc 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)This Chenin Blanc’s tentacled label begs to be paired with author Jules Verne’s classic adventure-at-sea. Brought to the screen several times, the most beloved version comes from Walt Disney and stars Kirk Douglas, Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre, with James Mason as the iconic Captain Nemo. An eminently enjoyable family film, it was also a technological tour-de-force, winning Academy Awards for its special effects and art direction.
The Wine
Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s star white, and this mouthwatering new release will show you why. As the name and striking label imply, it comes from Seekat Bay on the gorgeous Western Cape. Since the vineyards are located along the Atlantic Coast, talented winemaker Mauritius Coetzee-Naude was inspired to craft a Chenin Blanc that pairs perfectly with seafood. Mission accomplished! With its vibrant tropical and citrus fruit flavors, plus a delicate honeysuckle note, Seekat Bay will delight with a meal (preferably a seafood feast) or all on its own.
The Grape
Originally from France’s Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc thrives across the globe, especially in South Africa (which holds over half the world’s plantings) and California. Along with crisp, dry whites like Seekat Bay, this versatile grape variety can also produce off-dry, dessert and sparkling wines. When left unoaked (as here), it offers white flower and ripe citrus- and orchard fruit notes, but when aged in oak, it develops a creamy/buttery character.
The Region
South Africa has the most beautiful vineyards of any region in the world—and her wines can be just as stunning. “The fine wines of South Africa deserve much more attention than they receive” (JancisRobinson.com). Well, we’re paying attention— in the last decade or so, the number of premium, boutique estates has increased greatly, providing the enthusiast with even more territory to explore.
With Food
Seekat Bay makes a swimmingly good match for all manner of seafood. Baked haddock with a squeeze of lemon, fresh oysters or mussels, shrimp alfredo pasta, you really can’t go wrong. This versatile Chenin Blanc will also be delicious alongside grilled chicken, roasted pork and other white meats. For a lighter pairing, try soft cheeses, hummus or crudités.
