Selección Especial Numerada 47 Pila No. 5 Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Sons and Lovers (1960)D.H. Lawrence’s famous novel about a British mining family is adapted to the screen by celebrated cinematographer Jack Cardiff in his directorial debut, for which he would gain an Oscar nomination. Cardiff handed over filming duties here to fellow Brit Freddie Francis, who shot this captivating drama in gorgeous CinemaScope and, in fact, took home the Academy Award for his work. Savor the dramatic complexities of the film with the velvety tannins and subtle spice notes of this delightful Spanish Cabernet.
The Wine
Spain’s rugged Navarra region is often overshadowed by its popular neighbor, Rioja. But the wines of Navarra can be just as wonderful—if you know where to look. Our local expert got a tip about an estate crafting some seriously delicious Cabernet, and after a taste of the wine, he secured a great deal for you. With fresh black currant, blackberry and toasty spice notes, as well as structured tannins, this oak-aged Cab is crafted in a similar style to Bordeaux and will delight with a variety of foods.
The Grape
Cabernet Sauvignon is the world’s most noble red grape, grown in nearly every wine-producing country. Its popularity among growers is often attributed to ease of cultivation—it’s a grape with thick skins and hardy vines that are resistant to rot and frost. And it’s always a hit with wine lovers, thanks to its ability to produce rich, black-currant-filled, long-lived reds. While it’s still less common in Spain than Tempranillo and Garnacha, there are plenty of top-notch, great-value examples to be had.
The Region
Navarra is the land of running bulls and the immortal setting of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. Geographically, it’s in an exciting wine alley: the famous Rioja region is to the southwest, while France and the Pyrenees are to the northeast. Many fine reds, whites and even rosé are made here. And in 2019, Navarra’s great vintage conditions let the grapes grow even richer than normal.
With Food
While fans of rich reds will enjoy drinking this Cabernet on its own, we suggest pairing it with Spanish-inspired cuisine. Kick things off with jamón serrano, Mahón cheese, and olives. For the main course, try Cordero Asado (roasted lamb) or suckling pig. You could also serve it with vegetarian dishes like vegetable paella, berenjenas fritas (fried eggplant), or a chickpea stew.
