Sendero das Meigas Albariño 2020

Classic Movie Pairing

Mister Roberts (1955)

For this white wine’s hint of the sea, consider this nautical comedy-drama with an all-star cast. Henry Fonda headlines as the executive officer, Mr. Roberts, who does his best to keep the peace among his crew, despite their shared dislike for their stern captain (James Cagney). Despite drama in the director’s chair—John Ford was replaced by Mervyn LeRoy, plus an uncredited Joshua Logan—the movie went on to become a big hit, winning an Oscar for up-and-comer Jack Lemmon’s portrayal of laundry and morale officer, Ensign Pulver.

THE WINE

Whether you call it Albariño (as they do in Spain) or Alvarinho (Portugal’s preference), you’ll find the best bottles of this fabulous white along the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. As The Guardian writes, Albariño is “the true celebrity in these parts…a wine that blurs borders.” And that’s exactly what talented winemaker Juan-Antonio Leza (inset) has done with this sensational new white.

Juan-Antonio took inspiration from the Sendero das Meigas (‘The Witch’s Path’), an ancient, secret route brave souls would take to smuggle grapes between Spain and Portugal. Following in this historic tradition, he chose the best grapes from his vineyards in Spain’s premium Rías Baixas region and blended them with equally pristine fruit from a top estate across the Mino River in Portugal. The result, as you’ll taste, is a beautifully complex Albariño with ripe peach, citrus and tropical fruit flavors—and a gold medal from the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

THE GRAPE

Hailed by Jancis Robinson as “one of the most exciting and vibrant white wines,” Albariño is one of Spain’s two flagship whites (the other is Verdejo) and the star white of northern Portugal. It’s quickly gained a following, making appearances on trendy wine lists nationwide. The grape’s marine note (sometimes it displays a faint, salty tang) is rather unique—see if you can taste it here.

WITH FOOD

Seafood reigns supreme on this part of the Iberian Peninsula, so locals would sip this lovely Albariño alongside grilled lula (calamari), sardinhas assadas (sardines with a squeeze of lemon) and other fruits of the sea. You could also enjoy it with grilled chicken, roasted pork and more juicy white meats. Fresh salads or veggie plates make tasty matches, too.
