Shroud Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
The Return of the Vampire (1943)Named after the fog rolling onto mountains that overlook the Pacific, this moody Cabernet pairs perfectly with the hauntingly striking visuals of this classic horror film. Atmospheric and full of fog-laden scenery, it features Bela Lugosi returning for the first time since Dracula to a vampiric role to seek revenge on the good people who tried to vanquish him 23 years earlier. Unrelated through story to his first vampire feature (by threat of lawsuit), the film features striking black and white cinematography and some unique twists on classic monster mythology.
The Wine
Our California expert, Clare Tooley, knows a great Cabernet when she tastes one. And all it took was one sip of Shroud Mountain—crafted by talented winemaker Doug Roosevelt—to know it was a must-have for our customers. Since we launched the label in 2013, nearly every release has won at least one 90+ point score or medal from some major wine show judges (including the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of North American wines in the world). Named for the fog that rolls in off the Pacific and blankets the nearby mountains, Shroud Mountain is a lush, ripe-fruited example of the stellar 2019 vintage.
The Blend
“This is the best Shroud Mountain we’ve ever offered customers,” raves Clare. “It’s super dark and has a lovely, ‘more-ish’ character to it…you’ll be reaching for a second glass, I guarantee it!” Clare sourced the grapes from vineyards spanning Mendocino County—with a dash of Clarksburg-grown Petite Sirah for extra oomph and color intensity.
The Grape
Cabernet is the king of the reds. Most famously, it’s the variety that powers Bordeaux’s legendary First Growths, like Château Lafite and Château Margaux. However, you’ll also find plenty of world-class examples in California. The best known (and priciest) reds come from Napa and Sonoma, but having friends like Clare and Doug means you have access to wines that offer serious flavor and value.
With Food
We probably don’t need to tell you that rich Cabs like Shroud Mountain are perfect for grilled steaks and other barbecue classics. Our top pick? Classic New York strip, served with a stout glaze and sour cream mashed potatoes. Pulled pork or smoked beef ribs in a rich molasses-based sauce will be tasty, too. Or try hearty pastas, like good old spaghetti and meatballs.
