The Shop Around the Corner (1940)This refreshing Sauvignon Blanc will pair beautifully with Ernst Lubitsch’s romantic comedy classic. Starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan as feuding coworkers and unwitting pen pals, it tells a timeless story that has been remade several times by Hollywood. Fittingly, the lovers’ secret is revealed through the use of a red carnation—a nice parallel to the floral art of Ernest Clayton, this delicious wine’s namesake.
THE WINE
Named after a whimsical wildflower that grows in the hills of northern California, Silver Puffs is quintessential Golden State Sauvignon Blanc, delivering loads of super-ripe tropical-fruit flavor, along with a hint of zesty herbs. Sourced from top sites in Lodi that belong to a big-name estate (who gave us a fantastic price as long as we agreed to not divulge their identity), it also shows off the beauty of the 2020 vintage. A mouthwatering aperitif or delicious partner to seafood, roasted veggies and more.
THE GRAPE
Taking off in popularity in the last 30 years, Sauvignon Blanc has traveled a long way from its spiritual home in France’s Loire Valley. Most notably, it’s taken on new life in Marlborough, New Zealand (where it’s famous for intensely concentrated, grassy/citrus flavors) and in California (where it develops vibrant tropical-fruit notes). It’s often favored as a crisper, more refreshing alternative to rich, oaky Chardonnays and can offer more zippy, exhilarating character than Pinot Grigio.
THE REGION
As Master of Wine Jancis Robinson says, “Lodi is a seriously interesting location for growing grapes.” Like Napa Valley, Lodi’s warm summer climate is tempered by occasional morning fog, which helps increase grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine, for extra-concentrated flavors. While it’s better known for Zinfandel, Lodi can also produce top Sauvignon Blanc with ripe tropical-fruit character.

Thanks to its eye-catching label— a reproduction of an early 1900s painting by American artist, Ernest Clayton—Silver Puffs is just as pretty on the table as it will be in your glass.
