Spotlight Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
The Sunshine Boys (1975)Considering the spotlight one last time, retired vaudevillians Willy Clark (Walter Matthau) and Al Lewis (George Burns) are persuaded to reunite for a television special after twenty years apart – despite now hating one another. This comedy classic earned Burns the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at age 80, making him the oldest winner to receive the honor at the time. Written by Neil Simon and directed by Herbert Ross, its vibrant comedy pairs perfectly with this fresh and crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
The Wine
Our New Zealand expert, Dan Parrott, loves to ‘spotlight’ top winemakers. Here, Dan brings you an exclusive, single-vineyard release from the talented Eveline Fraser (former head winemaker at Cloudy Bay, perhaps the most sought-after Kiwi Sauvignon of all). She’s scooped mega accolades for her work – including Decanter’s International Trophy for her dry Riesling and multiple medals for her Sauvignon Blancs. Her new Sauvignon ripples with juicy, tropical-fruit flavors and a fresh, floral edge.
The Winemaker
Before Cloudy Bay, Eveline (below) was New Zealand’s first-ever female brewer. She also worked a vintage at Veuve Clicquot in Champagne, honing her sparkling talents (which would later come in handy at Cloudy Bay for their Pelorus bubblies). An early proponent of screwcaps, Eveline conducted a series of trials with the then-controversial closure, convinced they were superior to cork. A short time later, all of Cloudy Bay’s wines (and most of New Zealand’s) had adopted the technology.
The Region
Marlborough is home to more vineyards than any other spot in New Zealand. But if you’re talking about Sauvignon, the region is a byword for top quality. This aromatic and refreshing grape is at its most intense here. Along the banks of the Wairau River, Marlborough’s warm days, cool nights, and rocky soils produce the perfect balance of pure fruit flavor and crisp, mouthwatering acidity.
