Stones & Bones 2019

Vinho Regional Lisboa, Portugal

Classic Movie Pairing

West Side Story (1961)

Few movie experiences can compete with the richness of the classic musical West Side Story. Pour a glass of this sumptuous and intense red blend and join Maria and Tony for a spirited and passionate romp through New York. Like this powerful Portuguese wine, which uses old-vine grapes in a modernized way, Leonard Bernstein’s infectious score and Jerome Robbins’ choreography update a classic love story with unforgettable panache.

The Wine

THE WINE Today, paleophiles and wine lovers share a not-so missing link: this luscious red from the historic Casa Santos Lima, named one of 2017’s Top 100 Wineries (in the world!) by the World Ranking of Wine & Spirits. The team uncovered a cache of dinosaur fossils during a recent renovation, and the ‘stones and bones’ they found in the vineyards inspired the name on the label. The richness in the glass, however, was all thanks to the talented Diogo Sepúlveda. He set out to make a red of real power—and he’s succeeded deliciously. Stones & Bones boasts 90 points, two gold medals and a Wine Enthusiast ‘Best Buy’ rating. Enjoy its intense black plum and bramble fruit flavors with barbecue.

The Country

Portugal’s indigenous grapes grow on gnarled, old vines that produce wonderful flavors—often at great prices. In recent years, Portugal’s boutiques have modernized and are gaining acclaim for their top-notch wines. No wonder Wine Spectator’s Matt Kramer calls it “the most exciting wine place on the planet today.”

The Grape

Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo in neighboring Spain) is one of the main grapes used in Port, that famous dessert wine prized for its deep, dark opulence. Here, Diogo blends it with native Portuguese star, Touriga Nacional, plus international Syrah and intense Alicante Bouschet—all of which thrive in Lisboa’s sun-drenched vineyards. Together, these grapes yield a very rich, fruity red.

With Food

Pop the cork and fire up your grill (or smoker). Stones & Bones is the quintessential barbecue red and will pair with everything from steaks and burgers to smoked turkey legs and beef ribs. Slow-cooked pork shoulder in a rich and tangy sauce will also work well here. For a tasty vegetarian pairing, try portobello mushroom stew or freekeh- and onion-stuffed tomatoes.
