One Million Years B.C. (1966)

Neither the most thought-provoking nor historically accurate film, this prehistoric classic is chock full of adventure and pure fun. Often remembered for its leading lady, Raquel Welch, the real stars may be special effects artist Ray Harryhausen and his stop-motion dinosaurs. Whether rooting for or against them, they are a blast to watch. Paired with Stones & Bones, a lively and brisk white blend which has its own dinosaur connection, the entertainment factor is raised up to a whole new level.

The Wine

Today, paleophiles and wine lovers share a not-so missing link: this luscious white from the historic Casa Santos Lima. The team uncovered a cache of dinosaur fossils during a recent renovation, and the ‘stones and bones’ they found in the vineyards inspired the name on the label. The opulence in the glass, however, was all thanks to the talented Diogo Sepúlveda. Fascinated by the giants that roamed this land millions of years ago, he set out to make a white of real character—and he’s succeeded deliciously. Stones & Bones boasts a long history of international acclaim, plus smooth layers of ripe orchard fruit and toasty oak flavor.

The Country

Portugal’s indigenous grapes grow on gnarled, old vines that produce wonderful flavors—often at outstanding prices. In recent years, Portugal’s previously little-known boutiques have modernized and are gaining acclaim for their top-notch wines. No wonder Wine Spectator’s Matt Kramer calls it “the most exciting wine place on the planet today.”

The Grapes

Like its highly acclaimed, bestselling red counterpart, the white Stones & Bones is a masterful blend of a native Portuguese grape and star international varieties. Portugal’s Arinto (40%) imparts the wine’s lively, refreshing acidity, ripe citrus flavors and subtle mineral notes. Diogo chose to add Viognier (30%) and Chardonnay (30%) to give orchard fruit flavors, aromatic complexity and fullness to the wine.

With Food

Diogo recommends Stones & Bones with all manner of seafood dishes. Try it with fried calamari, seared scallops or even baked tilapia in a creamy lemon-butter sauce (to bring out the citrus notes in the wine). Not a seafood fan? No worries! This fresh white will also be delicious alongside roasted chicken or pork, or served all on its own as an aperitif.
