Summersday 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Gidget (1959)This bright and lively white blend is pure California sunshine in a glass. Much the same can be said of this ebullient depiction of Southern California and surfing culture in the late fifties. It stars the iconic teenager Sandra Dee and adapts a popular book by Hollywood screenwriter Frederick Kohner, who based it on his own daughter’s summer adventures in Malibu. Columbia’s film was a huge hit upon release and it led to two sequels and a popular TV series with Sally Field, while also helping launch the sport of surfing into the mainstream.
THE WINE
They say you can’t judge a book by its cover—but in this case, you can judge a wine by its label. Summersday is, as you’d expect, pure California sunshine in a glass. Even better, this lovely white scooped up shiny medals at two prestigious San Francisco wine competitions. It’s a bright blend of white stars Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc, fresh from California’s premium Monterey County and the 2020 vintage. Cheers!
THE GRAPES
Though difficult to spell and say, Gewürztraminer (pronounced guh-VERTZ-truh-mee-ner) is easy to love. Originally from France’s Alsace region, this pink-skinned grape shines in cool- climate areas across the globe and produces highly aromatic wines with trademark lychee and rose petal notes. Its partner in Summersday, Pinot Blanc, is a rare, white mutation within the Pinot family that yields wines with vibrant acidity and ripe fruit flavors. Although rare outside of Burgundy and Alsace, it thrives in California and New York in the U.S.
THE REGION
Monterey’s a bit different than other nearby regions. Rainfall is low, but the underground Salinas River provides water to the vines. The sunnier areas also enjoy some of California’s longest growing seasons. Grapes here have a longer ‘hang time’ on the vines, which helps develop more complex aromas and flavors. Cooling breezes from Monterey Bay seal in freshness and prevent over-ripening.
WITH FOOD
Summersday makes a sweet treat year round, whether you enjoy it on its own or with food. In summer, it’s a picnic wine par excellence —pair it with fresh berries, cold cut sandwiches or veggies and hummus. In winter, it’ll delight alongside roasted chicken, turkey or pork. And any time of year, the sweetness will make a lovely foil for mildly spicy Asian or Latin dishes.
